2003 Bursary

An additional bursary award was available to current staff members this thanks to a generous donation from one of our members. Doug Pengelly (86-89) donated $300 for the Saint Andre Bursary. Saint Andre Brewing is Doug’s company, for which he is Master Brewer. Doug stated that he wanted to contribute something to HSR, and remembered just how difficult it was to makes ends meet on camp wages. Thank you, Doug. Many of us will find it only fitting that a brewery fund camp staff pursuing post-secondary education.

Kelly Bouman was the recipient of the $300 Saint Andre Bursary. 2003 was Kelly’s second year on staff, where she has served as Store Clerk and Climbing Wall Instructor. Although Kelly has not been a member of Scouting, she is proud to be part of the HSR experience for hundreds of Scouts. Kelly began her studies at Sir Sandford Fleming College in Practical Nursing this September. Kelly is the first woman to be awarded the bursary.

Christopher Perez (aka Pele) was awarded the $700 Alumni Bursary. Chris has been on staff for four years in the positions of SIT, Kitchen Assistant and Chef’s Assistant. He first came HSR as a composite camper. His experience was so much fun that he decided to join the staff. On staff, Chris has been a member of the plaque committee and has worked to introduce new menu items from the kitchen. Chris’ Scouting involvement began as a Beaver and continued to his election to President of his Venturer Company last year. Chris is currently attending the University of Guelph for Engineering Systems & Computing. Congratulations to both Kelly and Chris.
