Drag Lake Property For Sale

"Scouts ask $1.3M for land"
Posted on The Echo Online by Jenn Watt

Approximately December 12, 2008 - Scouts Canada has put a small portion of their vast Haliburton County property up for sale.

One hundred acres of property with 2,400 feet of waterfront on Drag Lake has been listed with Century 21 for $1.39 million.

“Because we’re not using that part of the property … we want to be able to take the funds from that piece of property and develop more programs and more resources into our existing camp,” said Peter Sundborg, executive director of Central Ontario Scouts Canada.

More than 5,000 acres is owned by the Greater Toronto Council of Scouts Canada and with the sale they would still have 4,900 acres with 11 or 12 uninhabited lakes to use.

Sundborg said that for various reasons the Scouts haven’t used the parcel of land.

“Drag Lake is a fairly popular cottage lake and for the safety and well being of our youth members we really don’t want them to be canoeing and sailing on Drag Lake when we have 4,900 acres that they could be doing that in a very safe environment where we don’t have cottagers and so on,” he said.

There is also a road that crosses the property, making usual scouting exercises of hiking and biking harder.

The main Scouts camp is on Kennabi Lake and if the property sells, the money will be used to update the facilities and create more programming.

The camp, the biggest scout reserve in Canada, has been used for more than 60 years and draws users from around the world.

Sundborg said while they are selling a small piece of their land, they have every intention of keeping the rest.

“In the world of scouting it’s a little gold mine, we’ll just keep that there and leave it there for folks to enjoy,” he said.
