Frank Standing (66,67,69,70,71,72,74,75,76,77,78,

September 8, 2008 - Frank Standing worked at HSR for 21 summers, all of which were with camp Maintenance.

Frank was born in 1918 and became a too and die maker. He joined the ranks of the teaching staff at the [former] York Board of Education, and taught machine shop at the George Harvey Collegiate Institute for some 20 years. This change of vocation from tool and die make to teacher afforded him the opportunity to do something else he enjoyed doing - that of serving on the staff at HSR. The truth of the matter is, teaching provided him with sufficient "time-off" so that he could do what he really wanted to do - work in a camp setting on motors and engines of all types, and have a hand in shaping the lives of young men through Scouting and be as close to nature as the building facilities at HSR allowed.

Frank had years of experience behind him and this was of great comfort to the numerous Camp Directors under whom he served. Camp Directors knew he could be counted on. They knew his advice came from an experience and knowledgeable position. He was a steadying influence on staff. He enjoyed teaching, both through his chosen vacation and his chosen avocation - Scouting. However he was only satisfied when learning had actually taken place - which of course is the mark of a true teacher in any setting.

Frank's unique stance, his sense of humour and his contagious laugh will remain in the minds of all who came in contact with him. Through this memorial notice we salute Frank: the husband, dad and papa; the teacher and Scouter; a man of stature and integrity; one who could be relied upon - a friend!

Frank pass away on May 13, 1991 at his home in Stittsville, Ontario. Frank will be remembered by all who knew him as quiet man, who got things done - by the time they needed to be done and done with care and precision. Our thoughts are with his wife Elsie, his son John and daughter Ann, all of whom spent years at HSR.

In 1991 the Kennabi Lodge was rebuilt with help from John Standing (66-68,70) and was dedicated on August 7, 1994 to Frank's memory.

On April 26, 2004 Frank's wife Elsie Standing (66-88) died. Together they were a major presence at the camp from 1966-1988. Elsie was very kind and friendly, and will be greatly missed by everyone who's life she touched.
