Ian Hancock (04,05,06,07,08,09*)

December 29, 2008 - Ian began his days in Scouting as a Beaver (age 5) with the 385th Agincourt. Being a leader's kid, it was natural for him to continue into Cubs; by the time he was Scout age – and able to make some decisions for himself – he chose to remain with the movement, going to the 284th Agincourt and then 5th Agincourt troops. Earning his Chief Scout's Award in June 2003, he stayed with the 5th for his first year of Venturers, and then joined the 1st Scarborough MedVents in September 2004. It is there he met Bruce Eggleton, father of former staff members Heather (99-01) and Chris Eggleton (97-99).

His love for HSR began at an early age, with being an Adventureland Goes North camper in 1999, and choosing to return annually for the 2000-03 seasons. In 2003, he also enjoyed a week of camping with the 400th Agincourt troop and company. It was also on Composite in 2002 that he met Christine Blair (03-05), and found that they both had been accepted into the TOPS Programme at Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute in Toronto.

Ian holding the Supervisor's Award 2008It was the summer of 2004 when he first became a staff member at HSR, as an IT. In 2005, he was given the job of Trapper/Composite Scouter; in 2006 he moved to Archery Instructor/Composite Scouter; 2007 , 2008 & 2009 saw him as a Rappelling/Climbing Wall Instructor

Ian was the recipient of the Staff Alumni Bursary Award in the summer of 2007 to assist with his post secondary expenses. In 2008 he received the Supervisor's Award which is "awarded annually by the Supervisory Staff to the HSR Staff member who actively demonstrated his belief in the Scout Law and Promise."

Following graduation from high school, he entered the Paramedicine programme at the University of Toronto at Scarborough, which is joint with Centennial College. He is currently in the third of the four year programme. Unfortunately, tragedy struck his family the weekend before his classes began, with the passing of his father at the Gilwell Reunion in 2006. As luck would have it, he was at Gilwell at the time, serving with the MedVents as part of the first aid team, but not part of the crew to respond to that call.

He currently lives in Scarborough, and can be reached at i.hancock@utoronto.ca or spacey_post@yahoo.ca.
