Rich Greenwood (70)
March 20, 2007
- After joining the Scouting movement as a cub at age 8 (Beavers hadn't
started yet), Rich was involved for almost 40 years as a Scout, Cub Leader,
Scout Leader and finally Group Committee member. In 1970, he joined HSR and
worked with Don Livingston
(69-75) and Brian Markham
(68-70) as a Waterfront Instructor. Although at HSR for only one summer
(darn that need to earn money for university!), the experience and staff left a
special and life-long impact, as he knows it has for most who have had the
privilege to work there.
Rich followed his love of the
outdoors into a university degree and career as a professional forester.
Following graduation, he spent 2 years travelling the world, then settled down
and has worked in his profession throughout northern Ontario. As of 2007, he is
the Director of Forest Management Branch for the
Ontario Ministry of Natural
Resources. Located in Sault Ste. Marie, the surrounding landscape dictates
current interests, which include sailing, kayaking, camping, and both
cross-country and downhill skiing. As time permits, his 100 acre woodlot gets
attention and maple syrup production displaces skiing.
While at HSR, Rich took
ribbings for regular receipt of mail from a girl named Sue. Well Sue and Rich
have been married since 1978 and have a daughter born in 1984 and son in 1987.
Heather and Neil both attend university and have inherited their parent's love
of the outdoors.
No longer a member of Scouts
Canada, Rich is forever appreciative of the learning, life experience and
camaraderie his years of membership provided. At the pinnacle of this, is still
that one summer on staff at HSR.
Rich currently lives in Sault Ste Marie and can be reached at
