Tom Childs (75,76,77)
September 2008 - Tom worked
at HSR for three summers from 1975 to 1978 where he served as Troop Scouter on
Composite Camp.
He joined Scouting as a boy in 1965 with the 25th Bendale and
rose through the ranks of that group becoming a Scout and Venturer. During his
adult service he was active in this group, the 23rd Bendale, 415th Toronto and
1st Centenary. He held many positions in Scouting including Area Commissioner
for Bendale Area, Assistant Area Commissioner-Honours and Awards in the same
area and positions ranging from working with youth and also Group Committee,
Tom has attended three Jamborees during this time. The 2nd GTR Jamboree in 1979,
and National Jamborees in Alberta in 1981 and Prince Edward Island in 2001.
After attending the University
of Toronto he began work at
Bell Canada where he worked for nearly twenty five years. Taking early
retirement he went back to school at the University of Toronto at
Knox College, the
Presbyterian Church in
Canada seminary. He graduated in the lay ministry program and does pulpit
supply and missionary work overseas in Eastern Europe, in countries that include
Hungary, Romania and Ukraine. A lot of this work involves working with the
Hungarian Reformed Church and in the
Gypsy (Roma)
community. He is invited to different congregations and groups to talk about
life in Eastern Europe after communism.
Tom is married to Carolyn, a Professor at
Trent University who teaches
modern German history, which includes Holocaust studies. He has three sons,
Matthew, Jason and Sebastian but he also includes their three year old Labrador
retriever, named Charlie, as the unofficial fourth son.
Since moving to Peterborough in 2005, and after more then thirty years of adult
service, he is no longer an active member of Scouting. He is currently a member
of the 66th
B-P Guild of Canada.
Tom is a ordained elder at
St. Andrew's
Presbyterian Church, Scarborough and serves on the session of the church
with another former HSR alumni, Mark Daly (73-78).
He is also a Cemetery trustee and Church Archivist at St. Andrew's, which is the
oldest Presbyterian Church in the City of Toronto, having been established in
1818.
