By the 1980's, there were discussions
about building a new building closer to shore for the Country Store - one way
fewer stairs that would be more convenient for Scouters taking their groceries
back to their boats! Seventeen
year staff member and former camp ranger
Jack Dobson (72-88)
passed on in the spring of 1989. His estate included a significant bequest for
HSR which allowed for this new building to become reality. In the fall of 1990 a
large clearing was made south of the new Health
Centre (built in 1985) in the area that had been Beaver Campsite. In the
spring, a 24' x 36' building was constructed that would house both the Country
Store (which had been in the east half of the Hub) and the Administration Office
(which had been on the lower level of the Hub underneath the Country Store.

The new building included a retail area,
walk in freezer, loading dock/store storage area, and separate administration
office in the southwest corner. A large deck on the front of the building
provided access to both the store and office. During the summer of 1991 the
building was dedicated as The Dobson Centre by Elsie Standing (66-68) at
a ceremony attended by all the staff.

Shortly after the centre opened, a gasoline holding tank was
moved from maintenance to a location next to the Dobson Centre to facilitate
selling motor boat gasoline to campers. In 2003 a pay phone was installed on the
outside at the west of the building thanks to a new telephone tower erected the
previous year.
